For the past eleven years, the Toomey’s Kids organization has been hosting Christmas Parties for Special Needs students in Horry and Georgetown Counties. In 2010, we have grown to the point where we have had to hold two separate parties – one for elementary schools and one for middle and high schools.
The parties are held at the local Moose Lodge, where there is a large hall with a great dance floor. We have music and dancing, magicians and face painting, a great lunch, and, of course, lots of presents from Santa. We work with the teachers to be sure that each student gets the present that they want.
This is a chance for the special needs kids to have a great time meeting all their friends and teachers from other classes. But it’s also an opportunity for them to learn social skills in a fun atmosphere.
The students look forward to this party and start talking to us and their teachers at the beginning of the year, asking when the party is and expressing their hopes for what presents they will get. You never know when Santa is listening!
